What is a Water Roller Coaster?

October 27, 2007

What is a Water Roller Coaster?
Water coasters have effectively blurred the line between roller coasters and water rides. In recent years, Mack and other builders have constructed several water coasters around the U.S. and the World. Water coasters are typically steel coasters with large boat-like cars (reminiscent of log flumes) and water splash sections. They add a new level of fun for riders combining the dips and turns of a coaster on a steel track with the plunge and splash of a water ride.

Notable water coasters include the Journey to Atlantis rides at SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Antonio, and SeaWorld San Diego. A few international examples include Poseidon at Europa Park in Germany and Vliegende Hollander at Efteling in the Netherlands.

Check out this video of Journey to Atlantis at SeaWorld San Antonio:

I haven't been on one yet, but when I watched the video, I guess I expected there to be more to the coaster part.

Vliegende Hollander at Efteling looks a lot more interesting. But you're right, the stateside water coasters are pretty much just glorified log flumes. I had the chance to ride Dive to Atlantis at Mt. Olympus, but the wait was unreal and it didn't look worth the wait.

I've been on Snake River Falls at Cedar Point. It was fun as long as you don't mind getting wet for the day! It actually provided some airtime (not much) due to the lap bar not being all the way down. I was in the third row. Ride it if you get the chance!

I`ve only ridden the skull mountain at SFAm.
