Laser Is Leaving Dorney Park

July 29, 2008

Laser Dorney Park SoldGet a Ride on Laser While You Can
NewsPlusNotes has reported that Dorney Park’s Schwarzkopf looper Laser has been sold. Check out this listing on UsedRides. Enthusiasts are saddened by the news. Schwarzkopf loopers are legendary. His coasters (like Minbender at Six Flags Over Georgia & Sooper Dooper Looper at Hersheypark) are dated by today’s standards, but hold a level of nostalgia for many. They’re also the only loopers that have a lapbar instead of the over the shoulder harness that Arrow and Vekoma have. This removes the issue of headbang and adds a level of fear.

No word on who bought Laser or where it will resurface. It has a portable design so it could show up anywhere even in a carnival/fair capacity. Wikipedia has more on legendary designer Anton Schwarzkopf.

My 7 year old son loves this ride and will be very sad for it to go because right now, it is the only upside down roller coaster he is tall enough to ride. We will be sad to see Laser go.

The laser has been a benchmark ride in the park since its induction 22 years ago. It will be greatly missed and I hope its new home in Europe will treat it as good as Dorney Park has.

Unfortunately I never had the chance to experience the Laser, as I didn't discover Dorney Park until 2009, and it was gone by then. It looks like it was a fun ride.

So, now that Dorney is planning to sell their Kiddie rides that take up the remaining space of Laser's area (Dragon Coaster notwithstanding, it'll probably be sold too, or moved somewhere else), this brings up the possibility of a new coaster being put there.

Judging by the space in that area of the park:

I can easily see a Intamin launch coaster, or a GCI woodie, fitting in that space. Just look at Maverick's footprint. Does it look like clearing a few trees in Laser's old spot would make it fit?

Dorney is one of the parks that is getting Planet Snoopy in 2011. That goes along with my idea that those parks getting a Planet Snoopy in 2011, will be getting Stratosaur in 2012.

        You didn't understand me?

I just mean't that the area was available for future development. I knew that Planet Snoopy is being put in, And I don't expect anything to happen there by… how about 2014?

        You got that?

Not to mention… adding something beyond 2012 may work in Dorney's favor here, considering the huge project Hershey is going to get in '12. Some of the smaller parks, like Waldameer, will be getting flats, and Knoebels will probably have Flying Turns up by the end of next year.

So, with all of the stuff the other parks are putting in, an addition and 2013 or 2014 will definately help Dorney get the publicity while the other parks just sit.
