Cedar Point’s 2010 Attraction

August 17, 2009

UPDATE 9/4 - Cedar Point announced yesterday that the new ride is a water ride called Shoot the Rapids. I guess my prediction was wrong. Here’s a new post where everyone can discuss the Cedar Point’s Shoot the Rapids.

Is Cedar Point Teasing Their 18th Roller Coaster for 2010?
The Center of the Coaster Universe appears to be expanding. Cedar Point has been teasing a new 2010 attraction on their social media sites including their Twitter page, Facebook page, & OnPoint! Blog.

The Coaster Capital Crown: The Battle to Stay Ahead
Part of the reason for the new ride could be Cedar Point’s claim to fame as the park with the most roller coasters on the planet. Think Cedar Point has that title in the bag? Think again. Six Flags Magic Mountain has held the title in the past (2006 with 17 coasters if my math’s right). And after removing a few duds from their lineup and adding Terminator this year, Magic Mountain’s just one coaster behind Cedar Point. So, could Cedar Point be feeling pressured by the rival mega park to keep adding coasters to stay ahead? See Cedar Point’s Lineup | See Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Lineup

A Quality Woodie for 2010?
Cedar Point’s huge lineup includes a wide variety of roller coasters. Inverted, hyper, launch, standing, suspended, mine train, racing, giga, strata, shuttle, and bobsled coasters are all represented on the peninsula. But, the two wooden coasters have been the lineup’s Achilles heel. Blue Streak is a 40-year old classic John C. Allen Mean Streak at Cedar Pointwoodie. It’s fine, but nothing to write home about. The one-time wooden coaster world record holder for height, Mean Streak looks like it would be quite impressive, but for me was a complete snoozer. When I rode it in 2006, I felt as if I was taking a long, slow, tour of the ride’s wooden structure. Read my full Mean Streak review. Recent comments left on my review post have included words like: “intense pain”, “extremely rough”, and “dislocated something.”

Obviously, the park could use an upgrade in the wooden coaster department. Ever since the park tweeted “Gee, See Eye!!!” enthusiasts have been hoping that a Great Coasters International (GCI) woodie is on its way next year. They’ve also had a tweet or status update that mentioned “TOGO”, the out of business Japanese roller coaster company that’s blessed us with clunkers like Kings Dominion’s Shockwave and the sub-par Manhattan Express at New York New York. So, the clues seem a bit all over the place right now.

My Prediction – A GCI Twister
I’m a bit drained from all of the Kings Dominion and Carowinds 2010 news, but I know a new coaster at Cedar Point is always a big deal. They really need to rehab Mean Streak and install another wooden coaster. Of course, I’d be partial to an Intamin pre-fab woodie like my #2 all-time coaster El Toro. If they install an Intamin woodie, I’m buying plane tickets tomorrow for Cleveland. And there are three Gravity Group woodies in my Top 10 so I’d always invite another coaster from that company. But, a GCI woodie would be cool too. Recent GCI coasters Terminator, Prowler, Evil Knievel, & Renegade have received pretty good reviews. Considering Cedar Fair’s past with Prowler & Renegade I bet they’ll continue working with them. Plus, a twister layout will take up less space than an out and back design.

2010 Construction Already Underway
Nick N. submitted a lead yesterday: “I went to Cedar Point on Wednesday and rode on Millennium Force. While on the Island half I noticed the concrete footers, but I also noticed pirate ship masts.” Anyone else seen signs of the coaster’s construction?

What’s Your Take?
What do you think Cedar Point’s new roller coaster will be? What kind of coaster do you think they need? Leave a comment below. Yes. Even you Cedar Point fanboys. Image courtesy of CoasterImage.

Let's see what CP's may get-

Multi-dimensional- doubt it. I don't think there is enough room for an S&S and too much for an Intamin. It wouldn't surprise me if CP gets an Intamin in the future, but I can't see it.

Water Coaster- major possibilty. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't CP tweet "Aquatrax" as well? But anyway, they lost their log flume and now their Chute-the-Chutes is rumored for removal. They need another water ride.

Floorless or sit-down B&M looper- not likely. CP could use it, but it's one of the few things not tweeted by CP

Woodie- Major possibility. A GCI is possible, but I don't think any other company will build a coaster at CP.

GG and S&S have not built a woody for chain of parks, and Intamin pre-fab would be at Six Flags. And anyway, GCI's open at a Cedar Fair park every year.

Flying Coaster- Some chance. However, Cedar Fair hasen't many, if any flying coasters by B&M. And I hope CP doesn't do a Vekoma.

TOGO- WHAT!!!!! It would have to be relocation. But why CP would NOT get a TOGO is because 1) they hurt, and with the SOB think, CF wouldn't gamble another rough ride, 2) they are accident prone, and 3) they spending a lot of money matenecing the Paramount stand-ups. No way.

Euro-fighter- No. That is what Maverick is there for.

So, these are the odds in my opinion-

    Water-42.5%

    Woodie-42.5%

    Floorless-5%

    Flying-5%

    Multi-D-4%

    Euro-fighter-1%

    TOGO-0%

when i was at cedar point three weeks ago i saw the footers on the island and they form two parallel rows like 5 ft apart so i would guess woodie but have no clue at the manufacturer

I really either want a 500 footer (yeah right) or a flyer.

Well, on Monday, we were at Universal. At about 11:50, me and my little bro were on woody woodpecker. One of the ppl said Rockit would open in the next hour for a " Technical rehersal" and once off, we saw ppl on it. We ran over, it was a 2 hour wait. We did single riders and got on in about 50 min. Best coaster ever. I give it a SOLID 10. The vertical climb was amazingly fast. Sound quality was perfect. TONS OF AIR ON THE DROP! The loop was amazing, and all the little stuff was better than like all the record stuff, but it was interesting. The crowd surfer was cool because the line was right under you, and would try to hi-5 u, if u stuck out ur hand. Lights were amazing. U HAVE TO RIDE IT. If u have a cold or sinus stuff, dont ride it.

Cedar Point's Web Blog just announced that it won't be a GCI or a TOGO, so they keep getting narrowed down, as they also twittered that it will NOT be an Aquatrax…

ok. the facebook page mentioned that it woudnt be a B and M, an S and S, a Gerstauler, Mack, or a Gravity group. The onPointBlog says that it woudnt be a Togo or GCI. So that leaves Intamin and Vekoma.

@ JaMeS – I live in Orlando, I have a Universal Pass, but haven't been out to ride Rockit yet. I'm waiting until after the Labor Day weekend when most of the tourist have headed out of town. Did you ride it? I've been looking forward for this to open, I'm sick of watching them build it at this point. Manta at Sea World is pretty rockin' too it's a B&M flyer type. If you didn't get a chance to hit Sea World on your vacation (and with the park prices in this town, I wouldn't blame you).

Maybe it's because I grew up in NE Indiana and Cedar Point was a 3 hour drive an I got spoiled with good rides, but the parks here don't do anything for me compared to Cedar Point. I'd take Millennium (sorry I can't spell) Force any day over The Hulk. Don't get me wrong they're fun, but even as a resident, they're expensive (don't get me started on Disney's $80 1 day 1 park prices WTF?!) But nothing beats a good day at CP if you ask me!

wheres the TOGO website? iv never heard of them, and whats CGi website? please?

Good questions Kyle. Got to remember not everyone's a coaster geek.

TOGO used to make steel looping coasters. But they're not in business anymore, so it was kind of silly to use them in a clue in the first place.

GCI stands for Great Coasters International. They make wooden roller coasters like the coasters mentioned above in my paragraph on GCI's.

The fact that Intamin has not been ruled out based on their hints (I'm taking Lamar Allen's word for it, I haven't followed the hints myself) could give some credence to the Intamin Aqua Trax water coaster rumors. Read more on the company's web site: Intamin Aqua Trax.

ok guys. i just checked out the Cedar Point Twitter Page. On the 24th,the tweet said Auquatrax??? Not in 2010…., meaning that it wont be an auquatrax either. hmmmmm…..

What exactly doesn't Cedar Point have that they may WANT?

That is speculatory question at hand. Current capital improvements for the 2010 season are already through the roof for Cedar Fair. Kings Dominion is getting the Intamin Giga, Intimidator 305 for 25 million Dollars. Carowinds is getting the B&M Mega, Intimidator for 23 Million Dollars. KD, CWD, CDW, KI, and CGA are all recieving upgrades to their Kid's sections aswell. That a current plan of 50-60 million dollars in investment NOT including Cedar Point. How much more will Cedar Fair be spending? Will the Cedar Point ride be Monumental?

It is easy to argue that CP new coaster will not be RECORD BREAKING or HISTORY MAKING,(other than the fact that it will continue to allow CP hold the title of most coasters) but more of a good quality addition to the line up of World Class coasters.

Now let's divulge my question I began in my statement. They don't HAVE many things. Like for instance, they do not have a Spinning Coaster like Tornado at Bakken. Or do they have A family inverted coaster like the Runaway Reptar at Carowinds. And many will argue that they do not have a modern wooden coaster like Thunderhead at Dollywood or El Toro at SSFGAdv. As we speculate today many manufacturers have been narrowed out of the 'competition.' B&M, GCII, S&S Power, and a few minor others. The companies still in on it are Premier, Vekoma, and Intamin.

I believe that CP is getting a Itamin Spinning Coaster. Since CP narrowed out the Aquatrax, they made Intamin the primary target, if it wasn't Intamin, hypothetically, CP should eliminated the entire company instead of just the 'Aquatrax.' Some say it will be a dark ride which could mean a "Revenge of the Mummy" style of coaster possibly. The only problem with that assumption is, COST. At this point CP is looking for a UNIQUE and THRILLING attraction to COMPLEMENT their already stellar line of coaster. 2010 WILL NOT outshine the current coater there or being built this year.

cedar point owns the first hypercoaster, gigacoaster, and sratacoaster. a monumental acheivement, it only makes sense, therefore that cedar point will build the world`s first coaster over 500 feet tall. of course there is the budget problem, but that could be easily sidesteped by simply lying about the budget.I can tell that this will cause people to ask why they would do that which is why I alredy have an explanation. If ceadar fair told people that they had raised there budget and six flags or bush gardens found out they would try to build an even taller and faster roller coaster to stop cedar fair from regaining the title, and win it for themselves. of course though, the question arises, whered they get the money to pay for it, sadly I do not have an answer for that one and i say sadly beacause I want them to build it. as for the spinning coaster idea i think its prettey acurrate seing as they dont have one and spinning coasters are realy fun and liked by kids and adaults as for a modern wooden coaster, probably not as many would agree that mean streak fills in the gap. i also think that they may construct a vertical drop coaster like srieka or oblivion not beacause they need one but beacause theyre a little laking in the B&M department seeing as they only have one. for me every thing else is a little blank but what ever they create i hope its good beacause i want to go there someday soon

Good comment QB3, but it strikes me that I read something recently about Busch Gardens' new owners, that the 'did not want to be in the rollercoaster/ or theme park business.' (as far as BG perhaps trying to out-do CP).

I mean, I hope the coaster wars go on forever, and that that is not true, because it benefits us as the 'riders.'

I tend to think that, as KDCoasterMan said, CP, is putting out over $50 million into Carowinds and Kings Dominion just for 2010.

So, to sum it up, where are they getting all their money/ budget, and also, I don't know where they would get the extra funds to do something 'world breaking' for 2010 at this late time. But then again, WHO KNOWS? ( :

    Great blogs guys! RollercoasterDude

What if they gave snake river falls a make over and turned it into something like Journey to Atlantis at Sea World in San Antonio … it is a coaster of sorts and it doesn't really get people wet as most of the water sprays away from riders. Just a thought since they did mention it in one of their hint posts.
