  • Intimidator Coming to Carowinds in 2010

UPDATE – 3/30/10 Intimidator’s open! Watch an official POV video and read some reviews here: Carowinds’ Intimidator Reviews & POV Video

Intimidator at Carowinds LogoIt’s official, Intimidator will dominate Carowinds skyline in 2010. At 232′ (23 stories), this massive new coaster will be the longest, tallest, and fastest in the South East. It’s also Bolliger & Mabillard’s tallest roller coaster in the U.S. Intimidator will speed its black Chevy Monte Carlo themed trains in excess of 75 mph.

    Intimidator Overview - Carowinds 2010

Record Breaking, History Making – 232 Feet Tall – $23 Million
As I predicted, the record is a regional one, but it’s still notable. Intimidator's Airtime Hills - Carowinds 2010As the tallest roller coaster in the South East Intimidator will edge competing Six Flags Over Georgia’s Goliath height by more than 30 feet. The history refers to the fact that the roller coaster will be the park’s largest capital investment in its 37 year history at a total investment of $23 million.

    The NASCAR-Earnhardt Theme
All signs pointed to the new roller coaster being named Intimidator. There were the racing theme hints, the Sporting News article stating a rollercoaster with Earnhardt marks will be built at Carowinds, and the day before, the ride’s minisite was discovered at:  www.intimidator.carowinds.com.  Tieing the new roller coaster to NASCAR was a really smart move for the park. Anyone who knows the area knows that this IS NASCAR country. It will bring a lot of attention to the park escpecially with the NASCAR Hall of Fame opening in Charlotte next year.

Early reactions point at its similarity to Diamondback at Kings Island. It will be Me in front of some B&M Intimidator Tracka Bolliger & Mabillard with red track and gray supports. I can already say that it’s going to offer a smooth comfortable ride and have a high ride capacity that should produce fairly quick moving line. These two factors are hallmarks of B&M’s roller coasters.

I will update this post on Thursday with more of my thoughts on the ride’s layout. I’ve uploaded pictures from the media event as well as 6 more shots of the new coaster on my Facebook Page. Check out this fly-over off-ride video of the Intimidator at Carowinds:

I knew that they were going to do this. The first time the B&M tracks showed up at KD, then they were gone. Cedar Fair had made a mistake by shipping the wrong coaster. B&M coasters are great, there will be lots of airtime, comfortable seating and the ride is as smooth as butta. Intamin is good too, they give you height and speed, but the seating can be somewhat constricting.

Well, I am glad that atleast some good coasters are FINALLY being built south of the Mason Dixon Line. It’s about time they put $25 Million into coasters! Plus it helps to boost the economy LOL LOL

I couldn’t be more thrilled. In addition to the height/speed/etc. there are some unique elements. I think it’s actually the tallest B&M in North America (gotta include Canada). And regarding the airtime- I find myself almost floating up out of my chair watching the hill crests on the POV video. Woo hoo!

Looks like it has nice airtime and a few more twists and turns than other B&M hypers. Looks like a good ride… Better than the proposed Intamin coaster at KD.

About the seating – no seat belts. Reminds me of Apollo’s Chariot. And with the airtime hills and that panoramic U-Turn, this ride looks like a winner.

If this ride as anywhere near as good as Diamondback was, it’s a winner. Diamondback was an airtime machine start to finish. The capacity should be great, Diamondback’s line hardly stopped moving. I think this could get me to Carowinds over Spring Break.

Actually QB3, while Intimidator is similar to all B&M hypers (they do after all follow a kind of ‘formula’), it has some unique features that are not really seen on the others. We won’t know until it opens of course, and time will have to tell, but I suspect Intimdator is going to put Carowinds on the map as a true “destination park” for coaster enthusiasts. This also puts Carowinds “up there” as far as the number of coasters in the park. I think it’s safe to say that it’s not just those of us who claim Carowinds as our home park that are excited about this baby.

they have 50 rides, which is good for such a small park. However, most of the rides are average, although a few coasters really stick out in my mind(e.g. Afterburn, Nighthawk, Carolina Cobra, and Carolina Cyclone).

But when it comes to park experience, I’d probably go with Cedar Fair. For now, I’ll say they’re even so I can write a post where I can investigate this more.

Also, I was not a big fan of coasters until 2 months ago(!), but Carowinds’ Afterburn is what spiked my interest. So, when you made your review of Afterburn, you said, as you quote “It pretty much maxes out what an inverted coaster can be”, yet you gave it a 9 on your rating scale. Yet, you gave Montu a 10, though it is basically the same ride. Did I miss something, or is there somethin that truly makes Montu better than Afterburn? This is a question that has been bugging me for weeks, so I’d like it if you respond ASAP.

Montu has great theming for the whole ride, not dropping it like most coasters (Im talking about you here, Dueling Dragons) right after they leave the station. And I believe it has more inversions, and it is LONG.

Oh, and sorry, Coaster Critic, about the side note a couple of comments back. I had no idea the “site” would become a link to a real site. Back on I232, I’ve heard from my uncle that the ride was originally supposed to be White Lightning, but changed it at the last minute when the White Lightning spy photo was leaked. As I said on the I305 post, my uncle works for Intamin, so they are working very closely with B&M and Cedar Fair for the 2 rides. Maybe the track mix-up a while back was a result of them working a little too closely with each other. Just a thought, but it makes sense to me.

Montu? You know that there is a review for it…

Back on topic, when did B&M return hills get so big! And after that brake run the ride seems to slow far enough down so that there is no air. I, for one, think I305 will be better.

    Reply
  43. #48 CFC says:

I don’t know, Nessie. Each one has its it own advantages and disadvantages. I232 is all about airtime, but you’re probably right about the end being too slow. We’ll just have to see about that. Meanwhile, I305 is about two things – speed and turns. The hills probably won’t have much airtime, but sometimes speed makes up for that. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Oh, and by the way, if you haven’t been on the I305 post, my uncle got me on the front car of I305’s first ever run, since he works for Intamin AG. I bring a camera along for the ride and link it to this site.

CC, which do you think are better, B&M Megas, or Intamin Megas.

JaMeS it has the same number of seats as other b&m’s so it won’t affect capacity.

sorry about the double comment, but this just occured to me. by the look of the video, and the pics of the trains on the website, it looked as if the “flying chairs” associated whith most B&M hypers wouldn`t be there. please prove me wrong!

When I305 and I232 come out, you BETTER have reviews for them FAST. I can’t use my Carowinds pass until June(!), and my uncle’s claim to let me be first on I305 was a big lie! PLEASE get a review up ASAP(Carowinds opens in March, right?)!

I DO NOT recommend taking your camera on the ride. If you drop it, it could hit someone and you could ejected from the park or worse. There will surely be professional on-ride videos up soon after it opens.

The ride should open on opening day which is Saturday, March 27th. I doubt I’ll be able to ride it for a while as we’ll be welcoming our second baby into the World at about the same time. I’ll be sure to highlight the coverage from other sites and early reviews like I did with Diamondback until I can ride it.

My uncle was lying, he is part of I305’s building crew, and said he got me a ride on I305’s maiden run on the front seat, but he was lying.

Can’t wait! I haven’t been to KD in a few years., and although I wish we had the Carowinds coaster, the 305 should be good. I just wish it would have went back up for a second hill after the initial drop., any one else agree? Hey man, sorry about your lieing uncle; that really sucks that he said he was going to get you on the initial ride.

Cedar Fair park Carowinds is reporting strong increases in season pass sales–up 30 percent over last year. They are also projecting better gate receipts.

Funny, CEO Kinzel insists the revenue picture for Cedar Fair properties is weak for the coming operating season. Odd he should think this–it is his own relative who is the General Manager at Carowinds ( the only park GM protected by an employment agreement with Apollo).

For the full story on Carowinds expected big season check this out:

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/03/21/1328146/carowinds-is-banking-on-intimidator.html

Reports from those close to Cedar Fair management indicate the decision to postpone the Unitholder meeting was made several days prior–they just did not make an announcement until less than 11 hours prior to the meeting. That announcement came in the middle of the night–approximately 6 hours after the close of the business day.

This speaks volumes as to the contempt management is willing to show its Unitholders. Management was more than aware Unitholders intended to travel and attend the meeting. Some incurring great expense to do so. Ms. Frole indicated Cedar Fair would not reimburse Unitholders for their meeting expenses.

Honestly, it is time Cedar Fair get on the job of profitably operating parks and seeking a management team which is up to this task. “
