New Orleans to Get Nickelodeon Universe for 2010-11

October 6, 2009

Nickelodeon Universe Coming to Former Six Flags New Orleans
While Nickelodeon branded rides and attractions are leaving several Cedar Spongebob Rock Bottom Plunge at Nickelodoen Universe in Mall of AmericaFair parks like Carowinds and Kings Dominion, the company will be opening its largest theme park in a rebirth of the former Six Flags New Orleans and Jazzland park. That theme park has been closed since Hurricane Katrina caused damaged it in August 2005. Nickelodeon also operates a Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America.

Bayoubuzz intereviewed the developers behind the revitalized park. In the interview a spokesperson touted that the new park will not be a regional park as it was before. With the Viacom and Nickelodeon branding the park looked to compete both nationally and internationally. He continued:

Unlike Six Flags and Jazzland, Viacom/Nickelodeon is an international media conglomerate which can drive traffic to this park from around the world, and of course the United States. Remember, this well be the largest Nickelodeon Theme Park in North America! As much as Six Flags or Jazzland marketed, they could never come close to the marketing muscle of Viacom/Nickelodeon.

The target date for a soft opening is mid-late 2010 with plans for a grand opening in 2011 and openings for future phases in coming years.

As far the park’s roller coaster lineup, Six Flags moved Batman: The Ride and re-branded it (oddly) as Goliath at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in 2008. The Six Flags New Orleans Flooded by Hurrican Katrinapark’s other coasters have been sitting for four years and their condition is unknown. They include a CCI woodie with a hybrid steel structure (I wonder if that will help or hurt with the flood waters) called Mega Zeph, a wild mouse called Muskrat Scrambler, a kiddie coaster, and and a small looping Vekoma coaster called Jester. Obviously, Nick will re-brand the rides after Spongebob, Dora, Diego, Fairly Odd, etc characters. And, I wouldn’t be surprised if they added a roller coaster or two for their 2011 grand opening.

It really seems like the Nick brand is really spread thin when it comes to amusement parks. Nickelodeon has had a major presence at Universal Orlando since day 1. Then they went and destoryed most of the Hanna-Barbera at the Kings Family of parks in favor of Nick. Spongebob and gang booted Snoopy and the Peanuts out of Mall of America. They've got the Nick Resort in Orlando not to mention you can ride the Spongbob simulator ride at a dozen or so other locations! Uggg…enough all ready!

The sad thing is, Nickelodeon has taken over space previously occupied by timeless characters like Snoopy and Charlie Brown, Fred Flintstone and Yogi Bear. Stuff they put in at the Paramount Parks not more than 15 years ago is all ready outdated. Nobody knows what Little Bill or The Wild Thornberrys are anymore. Even Rugrats, one of Viacoms most popular brands 10 years ago is now all but forgotten.

These flash-in-the-pan characters are not worth the investments they are making!

Ed, you'll be happy to know that Nick is leaving Cedar Fair parks Canada's Wonderland, Kings Dominion, Great America, Carowinds, and Kings Island. So those flash in the pan characters will be no more. I have a 2 year old and even if I had an older kid they probably wouldn't know the Rugrats or Wild Thornberrys, but Dora and Diego are HUGE. I might have to write a post on this because there are some who are happy about Nick leaving and others who aren't.

      Thanks for reading!
