Six Flags Magic Mountain’s 2010 Roller Coaster

October 5, 2009

Six Flags Magic Mountain May Tie Cedar Point with 17 Roller Coasters in 2010
It’s time once again to speculate on another new roller coaster project. This time Six Flags Magic Mountain is looking to add yet another roller coaster to their already huge arsenal of thrill rides. Last week, NewsPlusNotes reported that during the Six Flags Blogger Call, CEO Mark Shapiro mentioned that Magic Mountain will be getting a new “children’s ride” that they will announce in November. The LA Times Funland Blog also cited the news calling the ride a “family attraction.”

There’s been questioning as to why most believe this will be a roller coaster instead of some other ride. It all stems from a December 2008 LA Times article:

“Closer to home, Shapiro said Six Flags Magic Mountain will be getting another roller coaster in 2010 and a Wiggles World kiddie land sometime after that. Shapiro also said that if Terminator Salvation: The Ride proves popular at Magic Mountain when it opens in May 2009, the wooden coaster would wind up at another Six Flags park in 2010.” -LA Times Funland Blog

Magic Mountain to Share the Coaster Crown with Cedar Point
In November, we’ll know exactly what type of roller coaster the new ride will be. But the most important part of the 2010 project is that the new coaster will put Magic Mountain in a tie with Cedar Point. Both parks will have 17 roller coasters. I knew Magic Mountain was close and for that reason I (along with others) was sure that Cedar Point’s much teased and hyped 2010 ride was going to be a roller coaster so that they could stay ahead of Magic Mountain. Instead, Cedar Point will be adding a cool water ride: Shoot the Rapids. Few seem to know this, especially very few Ohioans, but Magic Mountain had the most roller coasters for a number of years before they removed Psyclone and Flashback in early 2007.

More 2010 Roller Coaster News on the Way…
Also, just a note. I’ll be transitioning the New for 2009 page to 2010 next month. So check back for that page which will give you all of the latest updates for the biggest 2010 roller coasters.

What’s Your Take?
What do you think of Magic Mountain claiming or sharing the coaster crown? What kind of roller coaster do you think Six Flags Magic Mountain will add for 2010? What should they add? Leave a comment below.

Hmm… A family coaster. Not a very exciting way to tie Cedar Point, but maybe their 18th will be better. Of course, this could all just be bunk, like Cedar Point and its "18th coaster" turning out to be a water ride. It could be huge. We'll just have to wait until November.

I think if it is a kids ride it would be a good choice to get an inverted ride like runaway reptar at carowinds. The line is always long when I walk by and seems to be a kids favorite.

You're right, Schwarz. The Runaway Reptar is popular among the kids. Still, with a ride as big as this, shouldn't it be a little more impressive? At least a big woodie or something.

Your right CFC, it should be impressive, if not to attract guests beacause the media will be all over it. it probably won`t be a big woddie though, they already have tearminator.

maybe it will be like universals new robo coaster. but they did say it would be a family coaster so maybe the`ll come up with a whole new type of coaster that will be thrilling, yet gentle. by the way, has any one heard who will be desinging it.

Lets see, lets bring back the ol' list.

Spinner- highly likely, with Six Flags and all.

Launch- not as likely as above, but plausible

Blitz- Don't think there is enough space

Water- Pluasible, but SFMM has plenty of water rides

Inverted Family- Maybe, but I thought Cedar Fair built those

Other coaster that is already in the park- With an SLC going into La Ronde, who knows?

    Spinner- 60%

    Launch- 20%

    Water- 10%

    Other-5%

    IF-4%

    Blitz-1%

I think they should add a taller version of V2 vertical velocity @ SFDC, or a diving coaster. If I was Mark Shapiro, I'd maybe call up B&M or Intamin and have them redo Goliath and have some more airtime and a better 1st drop. Possibly have a Intamin looper or launch coaster…. Just food 4 thought.

I wonder if this is going to be made by B&M. They are my favorite coaster builders, and my dream job is actually to be a designer for their company. My guess would be either some sort of family coaster, like Runaway Reptar, or a giga or strata coaster, since this IS their 17th. I'm leaning for a Runaway Reptar ride, though.

Guys, they said "family coaster". It's not going to be launched or big. Mark Shapiro said it WONT be a Tony Hawk spinner, so I doubt its going to be a spinner at all.

I know it's a family coaster but I think it SHOULD be something like tower of terror in Australia. Cheap, fun, cool.

I would've guessed a spinning coaster like Tony Hawk or some other wild mouse because it's one of the few coaster types that they don't have. But if Shapiro ruled that out I'm not sure what they'll add.

CC, you said in your article that Shapiro said it was going to be a children's "ride," or "attraction" meaning it could just be a flat ride or something like that. Pardon me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't appear that he said roller coaster anywhere up there.

maybe they could get a copy of pandemonium and theme it to fit with the themeing of one of their rides, in the top 3 thursday for top 3 family rides C.C. said that pandemonium was the best family ride you`d ridden i geuss that park presidents like shapio would also like coasters, even shapio probably has seen this site.

PS – they never said that it would be a coaster, i also think they may just add a flat ride.

Why would they build a big coaster when they are only tying for the record? Surely the big one will come when/if they gain the record.

Everyone, I should've quoted another earlier article from the LA Times. I've inserted the quote and a link to article above. It specifically quotes Shapiro as mentioning a new roller coaster for Magic Mountain for 2010.

QB3, I doubt Shapiro himself has visited the site, but I do know Six Flags has visited. Like most smart companies these days they likely monitor the blogosphere or at least have stumbled onto the site on occassion.

Maybe it will be a backlot stunt coaster ride. The park needs could use a full circuit launch coaster.

I was just at magic mountain yesterday and, sadly, Goliath was closed, as well as scream. I don't know why scream was closed, but at the entrance to Goliath, a sign said "sorry for our mess but we are building a new thrill ride" or something like that. I don't entirely remember what it said.

were there any streets blocked off? how about any shops or buildings closed, if there were we may be able to determine an exact location.

P.S.- How about a Bobsled? As far as i know they don`t have one.
