Green Lantern Roller Coaster Announced for Six Flags Great Adventure

September 17, 2010

Green Lantern Roller Coaster: Former Kentucky Kingdom Stand Up Coaster Goes ‘Green’ in 2011
Green Lantern Roller Coaster & Movie Coming in 2011Six Flags Great Adventure has announced that their new stand up roller coaster will be themed after the DC Comics super hero Green Lantern. Just as the park’s 2008 roller coaster Dark Knight coincided with the opening of the movie, a Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds (my wife can’t wait!) will be opening in 2011.

If you’ve been reading the blog for a while then you know that this new roller coaster was Chang at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in a former life. Last off season Six Flags removed the ride from the Louisville, KY park.

While Green Lantern is a used, let’s say previously owned, roller coaster it’s one of the best of its kind. Stand up coasters have a pretty poor track record overall, but this Bolliger & Mabillard designed beauty is an exception. I really enjoyed my smooth and thrilling rides on the coaster and hopefully it’ll run just as well in New Jersey.

Green Lantern will include a 15-story tall lift hill and five loops: 121′ 7″ tall vertical loop, 103′ 10″ tall dive loop, 72′ tall inclined loop, and two corkscrews. It’d be nice if the tunnels have some space theming or some green special effects. Here’s a computer simulation of Six Flags Great Adventure’s Green Lantern roller coaster:

Like I’ve said, Chang is probably my favorite stand up roller coaster and a great roller coaster overall. Great Adventure fans should be excited for 2011. See pictures of Chang at: Coaster Image. Read the park’s announcement here: Green Lantern Coming to Six Flags Great Adventure.

With Great Adventure being my home park, I'm very excited for this ride. Having already been on two stand-ups that were pretty bad (Mantis at Cedar Point and Shockwave at Kings Dominion), it's good to know that I may finally be riding a good one. I'm also hoping this will balance the crowds in the "Boardwalk" section of the park. Right now everyone runs to Superman which makes the line unbearable (Scream Machine was almost always a walk-on so that didn't help). With this addition I'm expecting the crowd levels to be a little more balanced.

Chang is also my favorite stand-up, but I'm hping that the lines for it during it's opening season will cut the wait time for El Toro and Nitro. I love those two!!

Having never been on a stand up, this will probably be my first, if I don't ride another one before. It looks awsome.

I want to see Green Lantern. I also would like to know what kind of themeing the coaster will have. Will it be themed around Oa, the planet of the Green Lanter Corps? Or will it be themed around some sort of battle on Earth?

I have the demo for that. I still don't know how to work it.

This is so exciting. Although i'm sad to see the Great American Scream Machine go, this will be a good addition to the collection of roller coasters SFGA already has. It'll fit in nicely. I'm excited to ride it, since it would be my first stand-up.

Nothing would replace El Toro in my heart, though. The best ride in the park!

I can't wait. Those two tunnels in the video will probably have some sort of lighting effect … I doubt they'd leave the tunnels the way they are in the game. I hope this coaster has good theming … we'll see, I guess.

We may be looking at SFGE's second Bizzaro.

I was VERY VERY dissapointed that SF Great Adventure decided to remove the Great American Scream Machine and from what I hear in the construction industry is that they are scrapping the steel! It was one of my favorite coasters even though it got a bit rough in its old age. I always thought that if they were to get new trains with updated restraints it would be a much smoother ride. Oh well, as for the Green Lantern standup coaster, I am looking foward to riding it come spring 2011!

I still don't see what everyone's beef is with Mantis.. I aver to this day that it is a great ride. But I seem to be the only one on here who thinks so and also maybe the only one who never rode Chang haha. Point is, Chang(Green Lantern) must be flat out great to set peoples opinions of Mantis so low (just as I thought the Shockwave was pretty cool until I rode Mantis and realized that Shockwave really blows). I will be making my first trip to SFGA in the '11 season, so I'm stoked to finally get to experience a unanimously highly regarded stand-up coaster!

Never been on a stand up… it looks great! I will kinda miss GASM but this looks better.

GASM was fun, and never seemed to have long lines. That's something uncommon in many parks.

PS- Anyone wanna guese what 10.10.10 will be?

We're very excited about the new Hub network. Fraggle Rock, Transformers, GI Joe and Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony for my daughter. It's an all out 80's revival!

Yeah it's been great encoding those shows at work! I grew up (like you) on most of those programs!!! Hope your family likes it. The my little pony show looks like powerpuff girls and i've heard from co workers it's an enjoyable program!
