Anyone Else Want a Backyard Coaster for Christmas?

December 24, 2010

Jeremy Reid's Backyard Coaster - Oklahoma Land Run

Since it’s Christmas Eve, I wrote a post on Gadling about my dream Christmasgift. Short of a teleportation device, that I could use to save on expensive airline tickets, my ideal gift would be a backyard roller coaster. I wrote about them way back in May 2006. In case you missed that post, and I’m sure you did, check out the videos below of Jeremy Reid’s wooden coaster Oklahoma Land Run, John Ivers looping coaster Blue Flash, and my new post on Gadling: “All I want for Christmas is a backyard roller coaster”

Obviously, my ideal backyard roller coaster would be designed by B&M and it would span 5 acres. But, I love that these two took a do-it-yourself approach. If you find other cool home made coasters feel free to share them in the comments below.

I want to wish my readers a Merry Christmas! And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, then enjoy the day off and those post-Christmas Day holiday sales this weekend.

New Site Only Days Away
On a different note, I’m really excited about the new site that’s launching on New Years Day. Again, it will be the biggest change that I’ve ever made to the site. And I’m confident that all of the changes will only make it better. Please leave any feedback or suggestions you have about the site here.

What’s Your Take?
What would be your number one coaster-related Christmas gift? Leave a comment below.

I don't have the space for a roller coaster in my yard. My house sits on only an acre of land! Plus, I'm not all that industrial. For now, I'm just trying to get through high school.

LOL! Mine would have to be a scale model. I only have a terrace. Best of the holidays to you my friend. I'm happy to have have learned about this great site. It has brightened my year! Great writing, articles and insights.

May all of your Christmas wishes be granted and I hope we bump into each other over the summer on one of our excursions. It's great knowing that I'm far from the only coaster fanatic out there. We are legion! Maybe we can get a group trip together at some park this year. I think it'd be fun to hang with a bunch of enthusiasts for a few days.

Best of the holidays to everyone! May all of your coasters be smooth and infinitely re-rideable.

How cool would that be! I feel like that takes a lot of money, though… :)

I think the builder of Blue flash (the one with the loop, not the wooden one) said it cost less than something like $1000 (not sure on the exact amount but it wasnt alot) I think its the knowledge required more than the money that stops most people from trying it. I guess its something all people like us dream about but never have the guts to give a go, with good reason really as they could cause serious injury if not built correctly. I guess we can all dream.

It was actually $1500, which is amazing considering.

If I wasn't living in a suburb, and if I had the jaw-dropping amount of money, I'd get an Intamin Megalite since they've got small footprints and they're relatively exciting XD
