The Coaster Critic Tackles Texas

April 18, 2011

Mr Freeze at Six Flags Over TexasThis week, I’m headed out to Texas to visit the state’s three largest theme parks. I’ll be visiting San Antonio for Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld. Then, I’ll be going to Dallas for Six Flags Over Texas and the newly re-opened Texas Giant that received some very positive reviews during a commercial shoot. It’s also my second most anticipated new coaster of 2011. Hopefully, it lives up to the hype.

The floorless beauty, Superman Krypton Coaster looks like a lot of fun. It inspired me to write a Most Wanted Coasters post about it. B&M coasters have almost never let me down. Hopefully, this coaster will be no different.

I’d love any tips for any of these park as it’ll be my first time conquering coasters in the Lonestar State. I’ll try to ride every coaster that’s operating, but are there any I should ride in certain seats or skip? Are there any rides other than roller coasters that I should try?

As usual, (actually, more than usual) you’ll be able to follow my trip via Twitter, Facebook, and I may even post some photo updates on Tumblr.

So follow me on Twitter and like my Facebook page to get my first reactions as I get off rides like Superman Krypton Coaster, Steel Eel, Titan, & Texas Giant. You can also see my latest tweets in the footer of the site.

What’s Your Take?

The one ride that I would skip is the Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. I gave it a 2 out of 10. http://coasterguy.wordpress.com/2011/04/17/rattle…

I can't skip a roller coaster that looks as interesting as Rattler, but at least I'll be prepared for a beating. :)

Yea, if they renovate it like they did with the Texas Giant then it will be a very fun coaster.

Shile at Sea World, ask around about anew project in the works. Screamscape is hinting to something hitting that area in 2013. Possibly named Manta (Part 3).

Will do. It's always fun to get blank stares as I did when I asked people at Carowinds about what would later be Intimidator. Maybe SeaWorld employees/guests will know more or at least have some hunches.

In SFOT, the back seat of Titan is way better than the front on the first drop but otherwise pretty equal, you hang almost sideways for a moment after the mcbr in the front however. Also, Runaway Mountain is a bit off the beaten path in the middle of the park through some winding paths and Judge Roy Scream as well as the Texas Chute Out parachute tower have oddly placed entrances that might be missed if you're new to the park. Use the single rider lines on Big Spin, La Vibora, and Superman Tower of Power if you're down to hit up the S&S drop tower.

Nice tips Gearhart. I'll have my eyes peeled for single rider lines at all three parks as I'll be tight on time (as always).

How is Judge Roy Scream? I haven't heard much about it.

Judge Roy Scream was good when I first went on it in 2005, I went on it again in 2009 and it was pretty rough. I sat in the back for the second time though, maybe that had something to do with the roughness.

I only got a ride in the front, but it was maybe a little above average. Not too rough with some spots of floater air. It's worth at least one spin

Unfortunately never been so can't offer advice on that BUT I just tried the flying eagles at KD and it was a great non coaster ride as you stated! Good call

Glad you liked it. Definitely an odd ride that can be 'extreme' or relaxing depending on how you fly it.

I'm looking forward to your comprehensive review of the revamped Texas Giant. We're heading into new territory with that new track rail formation.

One tip. When you ride Mr. Freeze at Six Flags Over Texas, (I rode the copy in STL) ride in the front seat, and put your hands up before the launch. You'll here three fast clicks as the train launches, and the vertical tophat is insane to ride with only a lapbar.

Agreed! The top hat is my favorite part, you just hang. And does anyone else notice that it is much rougher when going backwards? Forwards is fine but backwards (on the SFSTL one) gets really rough for me.

It is a lot rougher going backwards, before you lainch on the Texas one a row of lights flashes down the launch tunnel.

Thanks for the tip. I'm looking forward to Mr. Freeze as well. Unless I've got amnesia, I don't think I've done an inside tophat. I think Batman & Robin at SFGADV had one, but I never got a chance to ride it.

I'm back from my trip. I'll have a Texas Giant review up on Monday morning and more from the trip in the coming weeks. Both Six Flags parks were great. Unfortunately, I ran out of time in San Antonio and I didn't make it to SeaWorld. Maybe I'll make it back for their rumored new coaster.

You didn't miss much by skipping Sea World. The state already has two B:TR clones and Steel Eel, while an enjoyable ride, isn't anything to marvel at.
