Featured Photo #16 – A Stand-Up Stand Out

April 30, 2011

Chang at Kentucky Kingdom

This is a photo of one of the corkscrews towards the end of Chang at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. I took it on my visit to the park back in 2006.  A diamond in the rough, Chang was easily the highlight of my visit. It had everything you’d want in a steel looper: height, speed, smoothness, and cool looping elements like the inclined (bent over) loop.

I’ve written a lot about Chang because it’s like an exception to the rule when it comes to stand-up coasters. Most, not all, stand-ups are sub-par and uncomfortable. Six Flags Great Adventure fans are lucky to have one of the best loopers I’ve encountered with a shiny new theme and (possibly) some cool effects in Green Lantern. At its core, they should be getting a really good coaster.

Read my full Chang at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom review.

I heard Kentucky Kingdom intends to add a new B&M when it reopens.

I've never ridden atand-up but the layout looks like a lot of fun.

      Err… oops.

I've never ridden a stand-up, but the layout looks like a lot of fun.

I had just been talking in a chatroom, so I was sort-of stuck in the "type as quickly as possible" mindset. Sorry about that.

Chang in Thai means Elephant. I don't know what Chang in Chinese means! SFGreatAdventure is lucky to have one of the best coaster lineups in the world.

I put "Chang" in the chinese box on Google translate and it said; "Do you mean 厂?" I clicked "yes" and hit "Listen". It sounded alright, so I translated it, and the "English" box said it meant "Plant."

Chang means Long in Chinese. I read it in a book. http://www.thecoastercritic.com/2011/01/contribut…

I agree, wholeheartedly. Chang is one of only two stand-up coasters that I found comfortable, fun and re-rideable. (The Georgia Scorcher is the other one.) I hope they take care in its move and reconstruction in Jersey

Was just at Great Adventure the other day, and while Chang (Green Lantern) looks like a fantastic ride, they put it where Scream Machine used to be: next to the parking lot. It looks very crammed into the space. I don't go to Great Adventure for the charm of it, but there were so many places that it seems like they could've put Chang that would have been better. However, it does have a very cool black and green track, and it appears to be huge. I'm excited for ERT for pass holders next weekend.
