Early Reviews & a POV Video – Green Lantern @ Six Flags Great Adventure

May 26, 2011

Six Flags Great Adventure’s Green Lantern-theme Stand Up Coaster Opens
Green Lantern at Six Flags Great AdventureLast week, Great Adventure fans got their first rides on the Green Lantern. Replacing the aging and rough Great American Scream Machine, the B&M stand up was a remarkable ride in its former life as Chang at Kentucky Kingdom.

During its transformation the ride received new trains and a fresh, mostly green, paint job. I noticed that the track is yellow at some points like that huge vertical loop. I wondered if it was to pay homage to its Chang years or if it had to do with the Green Lantern’s enemies who use yellow energy. Great Adventure Online answered my question via their Facebook page. They said that the yellow track was indeed tied to the hero’s storyline and his nemesis.

Early Reviews of Green Lantern
The prevailing theme from the reviews that I’ve read is that Green Lantern is very forceful. One commenter on this site mentioned an experience similar to what I had on Cedar Point’s disappointing and painful Mantis. I’ve moved his comment below and I’d love to hear what others have to say.

Watch this POV video of Green Lantern at Six Flags Great Adventure:

I have just recently ridden the green lantern coaster at great adventure before the public can since i am a season pass holder. I was glad to get exclusive ride time and thought it would be a good ride. In layout, it was. However, several factors contributed to it being a bad ride. First and most noticeably was it was raining. When we got in line it was hardly a drizzle, but when we left to go up the hill it was pouring hard. Going throughout the course was really painful with the rain hitting my face feeling like needles. Another factor was that it was a standup coaster, and it put alot of pressure on my legs and the bicycle seat hurt my groin. It was one of the only coasters that i have been on that i was wishing for it to be over. The rain wasnt six flags fault, but the pain of my legs might have been the ride employees fault because you had to stand up straight and all the way back, so it was hard to bend my knees and it hurt my legs. Without the rain and with some knee bending it would have been a great ride.

I hope they eventualy put some greenery into that boring concrete lot. Or anything, actualy. I just want to see something other than concrete when I ride it.

It looks really great, but I really do hope that they spruce up that boring concrete area where it is situated. It would also be good to see some Bizzaro – Style tunnels and a nice station.

It was a cool ride, because it was different than SFGA's other roller coasters… standing up adds a new dimension to a ride. I'm a girl- and I found the "seat" uncomfortable, I heard multiple complaints from men after the ride about their groin discomfort. I can only imagine! It is not one of the smoother coasters in the park. If you want smooth- stick with Batman, Superman or Nitro, although it is nowhere near as headbanging as Scream Machine was. I'm on the shorter side- 5'2'', and that may have added to my discomfort.

The park was not packed last night, so my wait was only 30 minutes. I am sure the wait time will be 2+ hours starting this weekend. It will be a hot and long wait. The ride line offers minimal shade, which really needs to be changed.

While I enjoyed it, because it was a novel ride for the park, I will not go on Green Lantern again. Overall I give it a 6/10 due to discomfort. It's not a painful ride, just not pleasurable.

While I have never ridden Chang/Green Lantern I recently rode my 3rd stand up coaster which was Mantis. My conclusion from this is I do NOT like Stand up coasters. There is a reason they aren't making them anymore (at least to my knowledge).

I don't think you have ridden Riddler's Revenge yet buddy. One of the best Stand-Ups in the world.

Looks pretty cool, especially the first drop! Not the typical "swooping" B&M drop… I've ridden 3 stand-up coasters, Batman: The Escape at Six Flag Astroworld, which I barely remember besides it being the first looping coaster I've been on, Georgia Scorcher at Six Flags Over Georgia, and multiple rides on Riddler's Revenge at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Scorcher was pretty decent, although I noticed it was a bit slow when compared to, say, Batman: The Ride. Now, I LOVED Riddler's Revenge the first time I got on it. Probably the longest and most element-filled looping coaster I've been on. But the second time I experienced a lot of side-to-side head banging on the restraints that caused quite a bit of pain to my ears.

As for the bicycle seat goes, the key, like a previous poster mentioned, is to get your legs slightly bent to get to a comfortable position BEFORE the seats and restraints lock you in. Your ride experience will vary based on how you're "standing" and how you're able to control and brace yourself through the various elements. Since they have to go through so many checks to get everyone properly locked in, you should have ample time to get to a good position!

After standing in line for 2 hours for the green lantern, I was extremely disappointed in this ride. Not only was the seat uncomfortable, I felt beat up by the end of the ride. I honestly couldn't wait for it to be over. I absolutely love roller coasters but I would never ride on this one again. Too painful.

Stand-ups are no ones favorite. But it's where B&M got their start right? And isn't this better than an Arrow looper anyway?

Nothing will ever top the Riddler's Revenge, primarily since I think stand-up's are pretty much dead at this point, but it looks very solid for a stand-up. They definately got a really good used ride.

First, isn't Batman: The Escape a former Great Adventure coaster?

Secondly, I haven't ridden this one in its new incarnation. I hope it remains as one of the two stand up B&M's I like. (Georgia Scorcher is the other one.) As Chang, it earned a lot of multiple, fun rides and didn't cause the usual head-banging and crotch killing. I guess I'll find out over the next couiple of months.

I was disappointed with the Green Lantern – I have to agree with Matt, PH & Brenda. The track layout looks really cool actually, and it is a stand-up coaster which I had never tried before, and since it was new to SFGA I was really excited to ride it.

Unfortunately the ride was quite rough for me. Being relatively tall (6 ft 4 in) guy I found myself fighting this ride throughout. The shoulder restraints buckle into a thin bicycle type seat which you are supposed to stand up straight over. Unfortunately I think i might be slightly too tall for it because the shoulder bar couldn't come all the way down without me bending my knees slightly. So the shoulder restraints were cutting into my shoulders the whole ride. And since the forces on my body were strong and you kind of need to use your legs and keep them straight to brace yourself/oppose the g-forces my leg started to get a cramp because I wasn't standing up straight, but when i did stand up straighter the restraints cut into my shoulders which hurt.

I rode with two of my friends who were girls and shorter than me I don't think they really liked it either. One of them said her harness lifted up during the ride so she was on her tip toes the whole time. And I think we all didn't really like the seats because it hurts ones crotch a little bit. But I am glad we tried it since it is new. It does a bunch of cool flips and stuff so it wasn't horrible or anything, you should still try it to see for yourself if it's good for you, everyone's different. Although I kind of didn't mind the Great American Scream Machine (the coaster the green lantern replaced) since it had no line and was a decent, albeit slightly rough, ride. I kind of miss it.

That being said, I usually have no complaints about roller coasters. I love roller coasters. I absolutely love Kingda Ka, El Toro and Nitro especially at SFGA, but Green Lantern is just not for me. It is the first roller coaster I've been on that I was wishing for it to be over.

I hope this review is helpful to someone :)

I rode the Green Lantern today it was my first stand up coaster. The ride was ok, but it caused pain in my legs, and in asking others they agreed that it caused pain their legs as well. Don't spend 2 hours in line. If you are going to wait for something wait for Kingda Ka, thats worth the wait.

My favorite B&M stand up is The Riddler's Revenge, It's not jerky, very smooth, and alot of inversions. It's at Six Flags Magic Mountain if you don't know what I'm talking about.

The ride was interesting but it did hurt my legs. I was unable to walk for about an hour and then it took me about 3 day to get better. During the ride I felt the G force on my legs it felt like my legs were cramping up…the second time around it hurt my crotch…the seat is very uncomfortable

I finally got the chance to ride Green Lantern today and I'm happy to report that I finally rode a solid stand-up coaster. I have been on Mantis at Cedar Point and Shockwave at Kings Dominion, and both were rough and painful. Thankfully, that was not the case with Green Lantern and it's now my fourth favorite ride in the park after the trio (El Toro, Nitro, and Kingda Ka). The ride was smooth and intense, and although the forces often caused intense pressure on my feet, it wasn't to the point of being unbearable. I would take the ride over the Great American Scream Machine any day, and I'd give the ride a solid 8.

Compared to Riddler, it's not bad (in terms of speed and inversions)

What I didn't like was the unique opportunity to experience head-banging. X_X
