The Coaster Doodler

September 14, 2011

Recently, I came across the Coaster Doodler. Brody Rose sketches roller coasters onto images in issues of the local DC newspaper, The Express. During his 40 minute subway commute, he finds an image that catches his attention and he integrates a roller coaster in a variety of ways. Sometimes he puts the people in the images on coasters trains and other times he has coaster track weaving in and out of objects, places, faces, and pretty much anything you can imagine.

For about a year and half now Brody’s been posting his creations at CoasterDoodler.com. When I contacted him to ask if I could include some of his doodles in this post, he agreed. Then, I was faced with a fun, but daunting task. I combed through his archive of doodles and tried to pick a few favorites of mine to share. It wasn’t easy. Browsing through his site can be pretty addictive as you never know what kind of photo will be next or how the coaster will be integrated. I found so many of Brody’s doodles interesting, cool, and even thought-provoking like “Slipping Away” where he doodled on a photo about Alzheimer’s.

For coaster geeks like myself, seeing roller coasters in non-theme park settings is kind of the way life is. For example, I often daydream and imagine roller coasters when I look at landscapes on road trips. It’s kind of intriguing to see images that reflect serious national and international topics with our favorite joyrides sketched into them. I’m no art critic, but the juxtaposition is pretty interesting.

Visit Brody’s site to view more of his great work. Time for a quick plug. I hope to showcase more off-beat and unique theme park fans like Brody in Theme Park Geekly, a new online community magazine launching in October.

What’s Your Take?
What do you think of the Coaster Doodler and his doodles? Do you have a favorite from my picks above? Leave a comment below.

I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only person who daydreams rollercoasters into random landscapes… And these drawings are really good! I was never a good artist, but this guy really has gotten good at drawing coasters. My favorite one is the Penny one, but all are very very good.

Seeing this makes me wish I was an artist. I have plenty of imagination, I just don't have good hands for art.
