Talking Wing Coasters with Popular Mechanics

April 28, 2012

X-Flight at Six Flags Great America - Wing Rider CoasterPopular Mechanics wrote an article about the wing rider revolution that’s reaching our shores this summer. Okay, so two roller coasters doesn’t really count as a revolution, but it’s definitely a trend. The article also covers Hersheypark’s Skyrush. Not to be left out, the Intamin hyper coaster has wing-ish trains. Well, they’re really more like Apollo’s Chariot and Griffon had a half-floorless, four across offspring or something.

The article also includes a quote from me where I explain why wing roller coasters look to be so exciting. I’ll get to experience one (maybe two) this summer for myself, but the way that the trains put you in such an exposed position looks to be a strength of these coasters. The article’s accompanying photo gallery included a few images that I hadn’t seen including one of Skyrush’s trains.

You can also read my coverage of Dollywood’s Wild Eagle, Six Flags Great America’s X-Flight, & Hersheypark’s Skyrush. And, take a ride on Dollywood’s Wild Eagle via this POV video:

Note – This video was filmed by professionals with permission from the park. For safety reasons, please DO NOT take a camera on a roller coaster.

I think the reason why these wing coasters are so popular is how they look from a spectator's point of view, not to mention the fact that the riders are suspended beside the track. I have a bad feeling (or is it good…) that the X-Flight design will become the next Batman: The Ride.

That's a good point. They do look really cool and most of the general public has never seen or even heard of X2, so the riding position probably looks even more impressive and new.

you forgot to mention that Furius Baco was the first wing-rider… it was manufactured by intamin back in 2007, it only has one inversion but the launch in the winged position is unique.
