Thirteen’s Creepy Blipvert TV Ads
Alton Towers has the hype machine going at full speed as the opening for their much anticipated new roller coaster draws near. Not much is known about Thirteen other than that it’s supposed to be so scary that there will be a controversial age limit. There was also talk of a limit to the times per day one could ride, but I would have to imagine that both of these restrictions will be lifted.... -
First Look at the GT Coaster at Ferrari World
Here’s a first look at the new GT Coaster opening this year at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi. The trains are themed after Ferrari F430 Spiders. Fittingly, the roller coaster will be a launch roller coaster. If the Roller Coaster Database listing is correct (it’s listed as “Emotion Coaster”), it’s being built by Maurer Sohne, the same company that built Hollywood: Rip, Ri... -
Black Mamba | Most Wanted Roller Coasters
This Bolliger & Mabillard low flying inverted coaster looks like a fun ride. Located at Phantasialand in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the African-themed coaster dives below the ground a number of times. It’s subterranean sections are reminiscent of Montu’s Egyptian-themed trenches and Nemesis’s low flight path. It appears to spend even more time underground than those two... -
Crystal Wings | Most Wanted Roller Coasters
Most Wanted Roller Coasters This week, I’m going to start a new feature called Most Wanted Coasters. I’m going to write about the roller coasters that I ‘d most like to ride one day. There are thousands of roller coasters around the World. While there are a number of rides that are identical to the rides at your local park, there are also quite a few roller coasters out there t... -
Nara Dreamland | Abandoned Amusement Parks
Nara Dreamland: Former Disneyland Knock-Off, Now Creepy Abandoned Amusement Park As I was doing research for The Final Project! (insert Europe’s “Final Countdown” music here), I came across the enigma that was Nara Dreamland. It was a Disneyland clone in Japan that closed a few years ago. From looking at a photo trip report from Theme Park Review, I’m not surprised that it ... -
Roller Coasters on the Move in 2010
Everyone does a ‘New Roller Coasters List’ (my official Top 10 of 2010 is coming up), but what about the new-ish roller coasters. Quite often there’s a shell game happening behind the scenes with rides and roller coasters being swapped, recycled, re-themed, and given a new life at a different park. Just like used cars, or should I say ‘pre-owned’, they’re new to... -
A Coaster Enthusiast’s Resolutions
As represented by the sudden increase in attendance at my gym, January is the month to start New Year’s resolutions. It’s the chosen time to turn over a new leaf, start better habits, and end bad habits. I thought of a few ways that I could be a better roller coaster enthusiast in 2010. Learn About Coasters & Theme Parks of the World Of course many of us know and love our local par... -

Thirteen To Scare The Pants Off Of Unsuspecting Brits in 2010 Alton Towers has announced the name of their 2010 roller coaster previously referred to as SW6 or Secret Weapon 6. The Intamin-designed ride will be called Thirteen and it will have a dark, horror-like theme. Details are still a bit scarce, but the ride will open in March 2010, so we’ll know a lot more soon. For now, we know that ... -

The former record holder Six Flags Great Adventure’s Kingda Ka, tops out at a blistering 128 mph. Ring°Racer will push the envelope even further with a top speed of 134 mph (217 km/h). The world’s new fastest coaster will have an appropriate home. Accordi... -
Countries with the Most Theme Parks
As we celebrate our independence don’t forget to also celebrate our dominance with regards to roller coasters. There are some amazing roller coasters throughout the globe, so I wouldn’t say that the U.S. is home to the best especially without experiencing any of them myself. But in terms of sheer numbers, by far, the United States has the most roller coasters of any country in the Wor... -

I’ve already written about the new speed champ Ring°Racer and Great Britain’s horrifically steep Saw – The Ride so this week I’m counting down three more International Coasters opening in 2009. Saw Ride Opens at Thorpe Park
Brits Brace for a Horrifically Steep New Roller Coaster SAW – The Ride opened at Thorpe Park in Surrey, England last week. It opened appropriately on Friday the 13th. Apparently, the country is in quite a buzz. Multiple on-ride fan and BBC news videos have surfaced. Aside from the Saw horror movie theming, riders seem most fearful of the 100 degree drop. Check out this... -
Best Steel Roller Coasters of 2008
Superman: Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England The top steel roller coasters in the world are increasingly not-American. In this year’s Internet Coaster Poll, Superman Ride of Steel retained it’s title for another year, but it was the only U.S. coaster in the top ten. Korea’s Eagle Fortress which had a controversial 3rd placing last year with only 6 riders moved up to 2nd, now ... -

Everland’s T Express Takes Top Spot Intamin Dominates Top 10This year’s Internet Coaster Poll had a big shake up at the top of the wooden poll as two-time champ The Voyage (Holiday World, Indiana) was unseated by newcomer T Express (Everland, South Korea). Intamin Pre-fabs For the Win!Last winter, I covered the T Express construction. I had particular interest because it’s an Int... -

New Ring°Racer Video Shows the World’s Fastest Coaster in Action Finally, more images and a video has been posted on the S&S web site of the Ring°Racer coaster coming to Nürburgring in Germany. Top 3 Australian Roller Coasters
Counting Down The Best Roller Coasters From Down UnderFor the triumphant return of Top 3 Thursdays, I figured I would countdown the top three roller coasters in Australia. As I’ve never ridden a coaster outside of the U.S., I invited an Aussie, Ash from ThemeParkNewsDirect, to provide this week’s Top 3. I did some metric system conversions for my U.S. readers. 3 – Tower Of Te... -

Theme Park Bans PDAs
UK Park Alton Towers Bans PDAsAlton Towers is a park in England that’s home to some great roller coasters like the inverted coaster Nemesis and the world’s first dive coaster Oblivion. I thought that it was a little strange when I reported that Alton Towers was looking into weather control to help with rainy days affecting attendance, but now the park is banning guests from bringing PD... -
World’s First People-Powered Roller Coaster
People-Powered Green Dragon | Greenest Roller Coaster on EarthHappy Earth Day! Today, I thought I’d write about the most eco-friendly roller coaster. Not only is it good for the environment, it even gives the riders some exercise. The aptly named Green Dragon located at the UK amusement park Greenwood Forest was the world’s first people-powered roller coaster when it opened in 2004. It...
